U.S. clamps down on banking transactions; terror group finds new funding

By Robert Windrem and Garrett Haake
NBC News
updated 7:56 a.m. ET Nov. 14, 2008
Seven years after the Sept. 11 attacks, U.S. intelligence officials believe they've won many small victories against al-Qaida's ability to finance its operations, but they remain unable to put a concrete dollar figure on their impact.

That's because they have no reliable estimate of al-Qaida's overall budget, according to current and former U.S. counterterrorism officials, which means the only measures of the organization's economic health are sporadic, anecdotal and fragmentary.

"When you see a cell complaining that it hasn't received its monthly or biannual stipend and it's unable to pay the salaries of the people in the cell, unable to make the support payments to the families of terrorists living or dead, that's a tremendous indicator we have pressured the financial channel," said Adam Szubin, the director of the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control and the man in charge of tracking terrorist finance.

CAIRO, Egypt — Al Qaeda No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahiri insulted Barack Obama in the terror group's first reaction to his election, calling him a demeaning racial term implying that the president-elect is a black American who does the bidding of whites.

The message appeared chiefly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies. Al-Zawahiri said in the message, which appeared on militant Web sites Wednesday, that Obama is "the direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader.

Al-Zawahiri also called Obama — along with secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice — "house negroes."

Separate bands of pirates also seized a Thai ship with 16 crew members and an Iranian cargo vessel with a crew of 25 in the Gulf of Aden, where Somalia-based pirates appear to be attacking ships at will, said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center in Malaysia.

The Macarena - Military Style

by Baghdad Bureau

By David Mac Dougall, Baghdad Bureau

After seven fun-filled weeks in Iraq it’s time to go home. In fact, I already left Baghdad this morning with cameraman Michael Pohl and right now I’m in Amman Jordan, flying in the morning to London, then New York on Friday and eventually back to Scotland. I’ve worked in Iraq every Christmas and New Year since 2003 so it will be nice to have a change of scenery this year.

Before I switch off the computer, turn out the light and head to bed, I wanted to post one last video clip. This comes from our buddies at Patrol Base Gaines Mill near Kirkuk. The guys were out conducting a medical mission at a small village and the local kids kept hanging around their parents and generally impeding the good order Major Matt McGrew and his guys had been trying to establish.

So how do you keep a group of Iraqi kids entertained? Turns out Matt McGrew thought the best solution was to teach them the Macarena. You know the dance - a favorite at weddings and bachelorette parties. Now… one of the last people I ever expected to see dancing the Macarena was Matt McGrew - especially in full body armor. But here’s the evidence, filmed by one of his loyal officers, and posted online by his wife.

If this video doesn’t have the words “viral internet hit” written all over it, then I don’t know what does! It’s like the Rick Astley “Rick Roll” video, except with more camoflague and an M-16. Enjoy!

Talk to you all soon! Happy Holidays!

Castro expresses willingness to meet with Obama
By Morgan Neill
CNN Bureau Chief

HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) -- Former Cuban President Fidel Castro says he is open to the idea of meeting with U.S. President-elect Barack Obama.

"With Obama, one can talk whenever he wants, because we're not preachers of violence or war," the communist leader wrote in an essay published Thursday on a state-run Web site. "He must be reminded that the carrot-and-stick theory cannot be applied in our country."

Friday's missive marked the second time in recent weeks that a Cuban leader has said he is open to meeting with Obama.

In the latest issue of The Nation, actor Sean Penn writes of his recent conversation in Havana with Raúl Castro, who took over as president this year from his ailing brother.

According to Penn, Raúl Castro told him, "Perhaps we could meet at Guantanamo. We must meet and begin to solve our problems, and at the end of the meeting, we could give the president a gift. ... We could send him home with the American flag that waves over Guantanamo Bay."

Illinois governor's words 'beyond greed'

Recordings stun political analysts with profanity, threats and demands

updated 8:05 p.m. ET Dec. 9, 2008
CHICAGO - The words on the recording sound as if they were uttered by a mob boss. Instead, the feds say, it is the governor of Illinois speaking.

"I've got this thing and it's (expletive) golden, and I'm just not giving it up for (expletive) nothing. I'm not gonna do it," Democratic Gov. Rod Blagojevich says in a conversation intercepted by the FBI.

Federal prosecutors Tuesday accused the 51-year-old Blagojevich of scheming to enrich himself by selling Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat for cash or a lucrative job for himself. In excerpts released by prosecutors, Blagojevich snarls profanities, makes threats and demands and allegedly concocts a rich variety of schemes for profiting from his appointment of a new senator.

Rev. Jesse Jackson Defends His Son in Illinois Scandal

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said it's "common in politics for people to try to leverage relationships," but his son didn't do such a thing.

Four days before the election, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich claimed someone came to him with a deal about filling Barack Obama's soon-to-be open U.S. Senate seat.

"We were approached `pay to play,"' Blagojevich said as FBI agents listened intently. The candidate would raise $500,000 for Blagojevich, and an emissary would raise an additional $1 million, according to the conversation.

The exchange contributed to charges against Blagojevich in which he is accused of putting his office up for sale, while raising questions about the identity of the candidate.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. was the candidate, prompting him to hold an emotional news conference proclaiming his innocence. Jackson, the son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, said prosecutors have told him he is not the target of the bombshell investigation, nor is he accused of any wrongdoing.

"I did not initiate nor authorize anyone, at any time, to promise anything to Gov. Blagojevich on my behalf," he said, without taking questions. "I never sent a message or an emissary to the governor to make an offer or to propose a deal about the U.S. Senate seat."

Jackson said he openly sought appointment to Obama's seat but denied offering favors in return to Blagojevich. His lawyer, James D. Montgomery Sr., acknowledged the Illinois Democrat is "Senate Candidate 5" in the 76-page federal complaint filed against the governor, who was arrested Tuesday.

U.S. attorney's spokesman Randall Samborn would not confirm or deny Jackson's assertions.

Illinois First Lady Prominent in FBI Complaint Against Governor

Illinois First Lady Patricia Blagojevich is mentioned a number of times in the FBI complaint accusing her husband and his chief of staff of corruption.

FOXNews.com

Tuesday, December 09, 2008

...Blagojevich is responsible for appointing Obama's successor to fill out the remaining two years on the president-elect's Senate term. The document claims that the governor conspired to trade Obama's Senate seat in exchange for his wife's placement on paid corporate boards or some other compensation.

The FBI complaint repeatedly mentions Blagojevich's attempts to win a plum assignment for his wife. On one Nov. 8, 2008, phone call, he discussed the possibility of getting his wife a high-paying job at a Washington or New York firm, or with a union.

On a Nov. 10 call, both Rod and Patricia Blagojevich -- in a two-hour phone call with Harris and other advisers -- allegedly discussed what they could obtain in exchange for appointing certain candidates to Obama's seat. The first lady allegedly suggested that she is qualified to sit on corporate boards. The governor discussed on a phone call later in the day whether Obama could get his wife a job on a corporate board immediately, according to the document.
Patricia Blagojevich has a personal history of friction with The Chicago Tribune. The newspaper has published a series of critical articles on her real estate dealings with politically connected clients.

Complaint Suggests Obama Might Have Caught Wind of Blagojevich Dealings

Barack Obama says he had no contact with Gov. Rod Blagojevich over his vacant Senate seat, but the sequence of events in the FBI complaint suggests he might have caught wind of the governor's alleged dealings.

FOXNews.com

Barack Obama insists that he and his staff were not involved in the alleged schemes Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich cooked up to sell off the president-elect's vacant Senate seat.

But the timeline of activity outlined in the FBI's 76-page complaint against Blagojevich suggests Obama's team was aware that his home-state governor was playing political hardball in the weeks before his arrest.

Blagojevich's Tangled Web: A Who's Who of Illinois Politics

The federal government's charges against the Illinois governor and his chief of staff's web of corruption reach far and wide

FOXNews.com

Thursday, December 11, 2008

Criminals, congressmen and the Chicago Cubs have all been linked to the scandal surrounding Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, charged by the feds with hanging a "for sale" sign over Barack Obama's Senate seat in a tangled web of corruption.

The cast of players in this drama read like a who's-who of Illinois politics and federal crime investigators.

At the center sit Blagojevich and his right-hand man, chief of staff John Harris, arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and solicitation of bribery. Federal investigators tapped Blagojevich's phones and recorded conversations that U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald called evidence of a "political corruption crime spree."

Fitzgerald made his name prosecuting the likes of the 1993 World Trade Center bombers; former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, now in prison for corruption; and I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney who was convicted of obstruction of justice and perjury in the CIA Leak investigation.

The FBI said its investigation of Blagojevich goes back three years.

At a press conference on Tuesday, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge in Chicago Robert Grant said that if Illinois "isn't the most corrupt state in the United States, it's certainly one hell of a competitor

Obama's Top Aide Discussed Senate Job with Blagojevich

Rahm Emanuel, President-elect Barack Obama's pick to be White House chief of staff, spoke to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration about who would replace Obama in the U.S. Senate, the Chicago Tribune reported.

FOXNews.com

Saturday, December 13, 2008

President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff had talks with Gov. Rod Blagojevich's administration about potential candidates to fill Obama's former Senate seat , the Chicago Tribune reported.
The newspaper notes that the revelation does not indicate that Rahm Emanuel was involved in any illegal deal-making for the seat -- the focus of the Blagojevich criminal investigation -- but if true, it again raises a question that Obama has deflected this week: whether anyone on his staff had contact with Blagojevich about his choice for the Senate seat.
Click here to read the Chicago Tribune story.
Communications between Emanuel and the Blagojevich administration were captured on court-approved wiretaps, a source confirmed for the newspaper.
Another source told the newspaper that contact between the Obama camp and the governor's administration over the Senate seat began the Saturday before the Nov. 4 election, when Emanuel called the cell phone of Blagojevich's chief of staff, John Harris.
Emanuel delivered a list of "acceptable" candidates, the source told the newspaper. The list named Obama adviser Valerie Jarrert, Illinois Veterans Affairs Director Tammy Duckworth, state Comptroller Dan Hynes and U.S. Rep Jan Schakowsky of Chicago, the source told the Tribune.
After the election, Emanuel called Harris back to add the name of Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan to the approved list, the source said.
Madigan on Friday asked the state Supreme Court to remove Blagojevich from office, arguing that he can no longer fulfill the duties of office.

C'est marrant, cette histoire, s'il s'etait agi de Pres. Bush, aurait sans doute suscite beaucoup plus d'interet!
